The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph by Ryan Holiday

December 1, 2019

An encouraging introduction to the philosophy and practice of Stoicism.

This was a refreshing, easy-reading overview of Stoicism, a philosophy I’ve only caught onto thanks to Sam’s Dot All presentation. The title drew me into starting here and I’ve lined up a few more books on the subject.

I was surprised to find a thought-provoking and practical book, not having to wade through something more solemn and heavy.

One of my favorite quotes that’s been entertaining and challenging is “don’t just do something, stand there!” I’m at a point in my life where I’m doing a lot without always stopping to focus on why. To me this is a book and a broader practice about taking a step back from “busy” to try and make more meaningful use of a finite supply of time and energy. To maintain a balanced broad view and thrive with resilience in the present.
