World Wide Waste by Gerry McGovern

March 29, 2024

We live in strange and amazingly-wasteful times, where our care with politics and habits matter a lot for those who come after us.

Every use of the word “digital” as a noun was tough, and there were a lot of them. It strikes me as an outdated expression from when things first started “going digital.” Some of McGovern’s illustrations seemed suspiciously simplistic, and some recommendations seemed unrealistic—but I’m still glad I read this.

It connected various kinds of over-marketed nonsense that exhibit the same pattern of harming humanity and the planet for profit. It made a variety of recommendations for thoughtful, actionable conservation that challenge technological waste with an optimistic view of where technology can be used for good.

This book gave me lots to think about, and these seem like urgent words to consider.
