Escaped royalty and creepy self-important neighbor tells story via literary criticism?

Despite moments of beauty and hilarity, I experienced most of this book in a fog of confusion. The lack of chapters or any semblance of plot milestones made it tough for me to maintain interest or even know where I was, but the rambling narrator occasionally drew me in for the ride anyway. Mixed feelings abound.
