Skyfaring: A Journey with a Pilot by Mark Vanhoenacker

October 11, 2016

A pilot presents his job and the wonders of flight with beautiful writing and fascinating insights.

I was expecting something like a book-length Quora answer to a question like “what is it like to fly a 747?” This ended up being far more: a thorough exploration of flight through the lens of a commercial pilot. Not only was there plenty of technical detail, but fascinating and well-written passages relating to philosophy, meteorology, history, business, relationships, all various perspectives that I found thoroughly thought-provoking.

We’d be lucky if we could clone Mark Vanhoenacker and have each new instance take up a different career and write about it. That clearly takes for granted his personal journey and unique orientation to flight, but I’m pretty sure those books would still be good.
